News that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be having a girl this summer sent royal watchers into a frenzy of speculation over the baby’s name.
The most obvious choice? Diana, fans say.
The former royals dropped the gender reveal during their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday evening, among plenty of other juicy tidbits about their riffs with Harry’s family and what life’s been like in the US, especially since they found out they would be having another baby.
“To have a boy and then a girl, I mean, what more can you ask for? Now we’ve got our family, we got the four of us and our two dogs,” Harry, 36, told Winfrey.
But many fixated on the future child’s name, speculating that she would certainly be named after Harry’s late mother Diana Spencer, who shared Meghan and Harry’s dissatisfaction with “the firm,” as Meghan, 39, called the royal family in the interview.
Like Markle, Harry’s late mother Princess Diana also spoke out about the alienation she felt after joining the royal family, and the mental-health struggles she experienced because of it.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex split with the family in what’s now known as “Megxit” in 2019, and have since spilled the tea over their treatment prior to and since their departure to North America.
Markle lost a baby before the Valentine’s Day announcement of her daughter’s impending birth, sharing the heartbreaking miscarriage news in an awareness-raising column.
“WHAT IF Meghan and Harry name the baby girl they are expecting DIANA,” tweeted one excited fan.
“Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will name their daughter Diana,” predicted @PPredictors.
“Meghan and harry are definitely going to name their daughter “diana,’ ” another wrote.
One anticipated a “meltdown” when “Harry and Meghan name that baby girl Diana.”
Harry and Markle declined to share any details on the name during the interview, but the couple is not planning to give their daughter the title of “lady.” However they will give the baby the surname of Mountbatten-Windsor, just like their firstborn, Archie.
Archie’s title was the center of one of the most shocking details of the CBS interview. Markle said that while still pregnant with Archie, she was told her son wouldn’t have a royal title and that he wouldn’t be entitled to security.
Asked by Winfrey whether she thinks it was “because of his race,” Markle appeared to agree. The media maven confirmed Monday that neither Queen Elizabeth nor her husband, Prince Philip, were involved in the conversation.
