Virginia Abolishes the Death Penalty

Gov. Ralph S. Northam of Virginia on Wednesday signed a bill abolishing the death penalty, making Virginia the first Southern state and 23rd state in the country to end capital punishment.

Over our 400-year history, Virginia has executed more than 1,300 people, more than any other state. For 200 years, those executions happened in downtown Richmond at the old Virginia State Penitentiary on Spring Street. Virginia’s history, we have much to be proud of, but not the history of capital punishment. Virginia becomes the first Southern state to end this practice. We joined 22 other states in saying the government will not take a life. The government will no longer execute people. Thank you all, so much.
