“Rust” director Joel Souza was spotted publicly on Tuesday for the first time since he was injured in the New Mexico film set gun mishap that killed the film’s cinematographer.
Souza, 48, looked visibly upset as he sat in the passenger seat of a car that was parked on the street in Palo Alto, California.
The director, who was shot in the shoulder in Thursday’s tragedy, covered and wiped his eye as an unidentified woman was in the driver’s seat.
Souza and the movie’s 42-year-old director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, were hospitalized after they were struck by a single bullet that was accidentally fired on set by Alec Baldwin.
Hutchins, who was struck in the chest, died at the hospital and Souza was released a day later.
The director on Saturday released an emotional statement mourning the death of Hutchins.
“I am gutted by the loss of my friend and colleague, Halyna [Hutchins]. She was kind, vibrant, incredibly talented, fought for every inch, and always pushed me to be better,” Souza said in a statement to Deadline.
“My thoughts are with her family at this most difficult time … I am humbled and grateful by the outpouring of affection we have received from our filmmaking community, the people of Santa Fe, and the hundreds of strangers who have reached out,” he told the outlet.
On Sunday, a source close to the Baldwins told People magazine that the 63-year-old actor was “absolutely devastated” over the on-set mishap and was canceling other projects to be with his family.
No arrests have been made in the case, but authorities on Wednesday refused to rule out whether Baldwin could face criminal charges.
