The highly transmissible COVID-19 omicron variant has been detected in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday evening.

Hochul said there are now a total of five confirmed cases in the state including one each in Brooklyn and Queens and one in Suffolk County, Long Island.

The news came after a Minnesota man who visited an anime convention at the Javits Center in Manhattan last month tested positive for the mutation.

Federal officials restricted travel to the US from eight nations in southern Africa after cases of the variant were reported in South Africa and Botswana.

On Monday, de Blasio on Monday urged every New Yorker to revert to wearing masks in all indoor public places as city health officials prepared for omicron’s imminent arrival.
