A stray bullet fired on an Oakland freeway stuck and killed a toddler riding in a vehicle Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The deadly shooting happened just after 2 p.m. on Interstate 880, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.
The young victim was riding in a white Lexus sedan heading southbound near Filbert Street “when their vehicle was suddenly struck by gunfire,” the California Highway Patrol told the outlet.
CHP reportedly said the victim was 3 years old, but NBC Bay Area reported that family members said the child was 23 months of age.
Authorities believe shots were fired on the northbound lanes of the highway and “bullets traveled onto the southbound side and an errant bullet struck the child,” Sgt. Raul Gonzalez told The Chronicle.
Authorities were searching for the shooter Saturday evening.
