Eight individuals were injured post a bus crashed through one overpass in the Bronx area of New York City on Thursday.
The incident took place at around 11pm after the bus driver could not navigate the roadway at Cross Bronx Expressway, said a spokesperson for the NY Police Department.
Images and video footages of the incident were posted on various social media channels, revealing the BX-35 tandem bus split. The front portion of the bus was dangling from the expressway barrier.
A person was severely injured in the accident while 4 people sustained minor injuries and 3 others suffered non-life threatening injuries, said the NY Fire Department in a statement.
The injured were immediately rushed to the nearly hospitals, informed the police. No pedestrians or vehicles were involved.
Emergency services went on to work until morning to make sure that the fuel and other dangerous materials inside the bus was secured before they could lower the bus on the road, said Steven Moore, the Acting Battalion Chief.
Notably, it’s still not known if the accident took place due to a mechanical malfunction or an operator error, said the police. No arrests have been so far, they added.
The streets nearby the accident site currently are closed for now and the officials say that the traffic has delayed in the region.
