MTA shuts down Verrazzano Bridge amid wild winds and rain

New York’s longest bridge was closed to cars amid heavy winds and rain on Tuesday.

MTA bridge officials instituted the full closure of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge at 2:30 p.m., an MTA spokesman said.

The shutdown came many hours after officials closed the bridge’s upper level because of “high wind conditions,” according to official posts on Twitter.

Wild video posted on Twitter showed a massive white canvas tarp gusting in the wind while completely blocking traffic on the Brooklyn-to-Staten Island span’s upper level.

The bridge’s lower level reopened at 3:13 p.m., MTA spokesman Tim Minton said.

Minton did not immediately provide additional details.
