Who would have thought the story to begin the week in Mets land would be about a walk by Luis Guillorme in a spring training game? Well, Guillorme’s 22-pitch plate appearance for a walk, along with his teammates’ reactions in the dugout, made for a fun storyline on Sunday. There’s a lot to like in Guillorme and this team, which has fun personalities and hard-nosed players that will be the recipe for the Mets to have success in 2021.
To talk Guillorme, the fifth starter and everything in Mets land, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me, featuring a return to the Nelson Figueroa Spanish Academy and a good conversation with former Mets All-Star pitcher and current baseball operations adviser Al Leiter.
Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake & Figgie:
- GUILLORME’S 22-PITCH AB: Cool moment for the Mets. This kind of effort against a pitcher that throws 100 MPH is important. Guillorme will have an important role as a utility infielder and late-game defensive replacement.
- LIKABLE PLAYERS: Dom Smith’s reaction was incredible. Pete Alonso was going wild. If this team wins a lot of games and makes the playoffs this season, it will be electric. This team has a lot of guys that make it fun to root for them.
- 5TH STARTER: Is David Peterson definitely the Mets’ fifth starter? Will Jordan Yamamoto get the job? Does Joey Lucchesi have a chance? It’s not a bad problem to have, but Peterson is not a lock just yet.
- MIGUEL CASTRO: Added a changeup to a fastball and slider. Will it make him more dynamic out of the bullpen? What will his role be for this team?
