Kyle Shanahan sure Jimmy Garoppolo ‘pissed off’ by 49ers trade

The San Francisco 49ers certainly sped up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s timeline with the team when they traded up to the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Still, they have insisted that they will not trade their current signal caller, and even plan to give Jimmy G a chance to start.

Garoppolo has yet to speak publicly following the trade, in which San Francisco gave up two future first-rounders. Head coach Kyle Shanahan, however, gave some insight into his mindset.

“I’m sure Jimmy was a little pissed off from it, just like I’d be too,” Shanahan said, via the Mercury News. “But me knowing Jimmy, he’ll be fired up and come in and work his butt off.

“The more mad Jimmy gets, usually the better he gets. So if he gets madder and stays healthy, this is going to be a good thing for Jimmy, too, which could be a great problem for the 49ers. I hope Jimmy’s alright with it and I expect him to be.”

Garoppolo has two years left on his contract, and will count for over $26 million against the team’s cap in 2021. However, his dead cap would be under $3 million with a trade or release, and less than $1.5 million in 2022.

Holding onto Jimmy G would signal the Niners serious about giving him a shot to compete for the starting gig. If he wins the job and plays well, he would also increase his trade value for 2022, a win for everybody.
