Nick Faldo wants a mulligan for the Masters shot he directed earlier this week at one of the game’s most visible stars, Rickie Fowler.

The CBS Sports golf analyst released a video Thursday explaining that he only was joking and attempting to motivate Fowler when he tweeted “Good news is if he misses the Masters he can shoot another six commercials that week!”

“I want to give you a bit of history. No. 1, I’m a Brit, and we only roast the ones we really like,” Faldo said in the video posted on his social media accounts. “Let me just say, I am a Rickie fan, always have been, always will be. What he does for the game is fantastic, and I wish him all the best.

“Like everybody, we want him to find his game as soon as possible. Five years ago now, he was voted by the players as the most overrated player on Tour. It motivated him to go and win the Players [Championship] literally the next week. So, a couple years later when things were gone quiet, I said to Rickie, ‘Hey, I need to give you a bit of needle, mate, to motivate you.’ And he said to me, ‘Bring it on.’ “OK, it’s years later, so hopefully he still remembers that.”

Fowler, who is considered among the top active players on the PGA Tour to never win a major, has yet to earn an invitation to the Masters next month.

With no wins on tour since the 2019 Phoenix Open, Fowler has dropped to No. 65 in the World Golf Rankings.

“I wish Rickie well,” said Faldo, who won six majors, including the Masters three times. “I want him to play great, get out there, play to the top of the leaderboard, and that will all be fantastic for all of us.

“In the future, I’ll restrain from digging a little too deep.”
