Glover Teixeira’s Cinderella story worth an extra $50,000

The UFC handed out four post-fight bonuses after Saturday’s card, including to three from the two title fights atop the card.

After UFC 267, four fighters picked up an extra $50,000 for their performances in Abu Dhabi. Check out the winners below.

‘Fight of the Night’: Petr Yan vs. Cory Sandhagen

Petr Yan vs. Cory Sandhagen

Petr Yan (16-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC) got off to a tentative start against Cory Sandhagen (14-4 MMA, 7-3 UFC), if not a slow one. But he put things together after that and won the next four rounds on all three judges’ scorecards for a trio of 49-46 tallies – and more importantly, the interim bantamweight title. Yan, a former champion who lost the belt to Aljamain Sterling on a controversial disqualification, now is set for an eventual unification bout with the champ. But despite the 49-46 scores, the fight with Sandhagen was closer than those numbers might normally indicate. And the back-and-forth nature of the fight is the reason for an extra $50,000 for each of them.

‘Performance of the Night’: Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) had been out of action for more than a year, but once again showed his hype is legit with a first-round submission of Li Jingliang (18-7 MMA, 10-5 UFC). Chimaev didn’t let Jingliang land a single strike in the fight, outstriking him 58-0. Ultimately, he locked up with Jingliang, then picked him up, carried him right to UFC president Dana White’s side of the cage, then slammed him down. Soon after that, he had a rear-naked choke locked in for another decisive win in the welterweight division.

‘Performance of the Night’: Glover Teixeira

Glover Teixeira

Glover Teixeira (33-7 MMA, 16-5 UFC) made history when he submitted champion Jan Blachowicz (28-9 MMA, 11-6 UFC) with a second-round rear-naked choke to win the light heavyweight title. The 42-year-old Teixeira, a sizable underdog in the fight, became the oldest champion in UFC history. It capped off a Cinderella story that arguably started after he lost a title shot in 2014 to former champion Jon Jones. His long climb back up the ladder to now become a champion is an ending straight out of a movie.
